Shanna Britta’s wearable art explores femininity, strength, nature, and transformation through one-of-a-kind sculptural garments. Each piece is individually designed, patterned, and constructed for the female form, combining couture craftsmanship with unconventional materials and reclaimed elements.
These works are not simply garments. They are expressions of armor, beauty, fantasy, and power.
IVORY CROCODILE
Clay, reclaimed elements & couture construction
Inspired by the strength and danger of the crocodile, Ivory Crocodile explores the repeating forms of teeth and armored skin. Each sculptural element was formed by hand from clay and painted in ivory and gold to evoke bone, pearl, and precious material. Discarded chandelier elements are repurposed along the hem, transforming ornamentation into sculpture.
PEACOCK GUARD
Gold corsetry, molded forms, vintage peacock feathers & couture construction
The Peacock Guard combines a structured gold corset inspired by Roman armor with softer, petal-like forms molded around the body. An exaggerated hoop skirt and train are covered with repurposed vintage peacock feathers. In nature, the brilliantly ornamented peacock is male; in this work, that visual power is transferred to the female form, where beauty and ornamentation become a kind of armor.
THE KNIFE THROWER’S MUSE
Silver-foiled leather, molded corsetry & couture construction
The Knife Thrower’s Muse reimagines the traditional circus spectacle of the male knife thrower and his female target. Constructed from silver-foiled pigskin leather over a sculpted corset, the work transforms the woman from passive subject into a figure of strength and control. Metallic surfaces evoke both armor and the flash of a knife, exploring the tension between vulnerability, danger, femininity, and power.
PHOENIX FIRE
Hand-cut leather, illusion mesh & couture construction
Exploring transformation, sensuality, and the powerful self women sometimes conceal, hand-cut pieces of red leather are layered over illusion mesh, creating the appearance of flames rising directly across the body. The accompanying mask represents the ways women may hide the boldest parts of themselves, while the garment imagines the moment that hidden self erupts into view.
